What It Is is a candid look at dealing with hurt and loss. Things in life unrelentingly happen and we are left to deal with them in whatever ways we can. This song traces a series of events and observations to a heartbreaking conclusion but attempts to live in the story instead of placing judgment; it's not really relevant whether things are good or bad when the truth is they just are.
